Shopping bags thing/

Every time you buy something in a store you get a bag. By the way, in certain grocery stores they charge you 5 yen a bag (about 8 cents), to help people remember to bring the reusable grocery bags. Clothes stores still give bags out for free. Anyway, we noticed that every time you get buy something and get a bag, they seal the middle of the bag with tape like you can see in the pictures. Most of the times the tape will have the store's logo on it.

Also, one time I bought a shelf (packed in a box larger than a regular plastic bag) and did not want a bag. They still took their branded piece of tape and stuck it on the box.

  1. In Taiwan they do the same thing now. They also tape the bag shuts. It is interesting the way different cultures are responding to environmental needs. Here in Taiwan you even have to pay for your garbage bags. Still, Japan is an awesome country to shop with.
