No need to turn the tram around/

These trams in the city of Hakodate (Hokkaido prefecture) need no tracks to turn around. They have driver's spot at both sides of the tram. It may be because Hokkaido is the northern-most part of Japan, so if the blizzard comes and the snow does not allow further movement, the tram can go back where it came from without any problems. Also, the track can just have a dead-end, no need to make a loop to turn around. a driver switches sides and ready to go again. Efficient.

Train day preparations/

Japanese cities and towns popularize railroad transport among the young population by celebrating the railroad day once each year. Here is the preparation for the celebration held in Hakodate (Hokkaido Prefecture).

Unusual buildings in Hakodate/

Several buildings seemed quite interesting to me, so I photographed them. The Russian-style houses are listed first. It was very unusual to see those in downtown of a Japanese city.

Old Hakodate Public Hall/

I was walking around Hakodate when suddenly a building caught my attention. The building just did not look Japanese at all, it looked very Russian.

This turned out to be the old Public Hall of the Hakodate Ward. The hall was designed by a Japanese architect (Asajiro Konishi), directed by Genkichi Shibuya (both were the official architects of Hakodate), and constructed over 16 months (from May 1909 through September 1910) by Junzaburo Muraki. The need for the building arose because the fire destroyed the previous public meeting place (machikaisyo). The building would not be possible without a huge contribution (50,000 yen) from Teppei Soma, a wealthy merchant. The entire construction cost 58,000 yen, which is less than $1000 at this day.

There is a small museum inside the hall.

Some of the old offices are for display as well. There are not even a telephone on the desk.

Two different Emperors of Japan used this hall as a living place while visiting Hakodate. This is what the bedrooms look like.

And then I caught up to them. They were not ghosts, there was a room where anyone can rent a dress.

A famous restaurant in Hakodate/

In my last post, I wrote about the square with four restaurants. One of them, the ramen place, is quite popular. The line to get in around lunch or dinner time can be more than 20 people, and the service there is pretty fast and there is plenty of seating inside.

On the picture a potential client is studying the menu. Entrance to the restaurant is hidden by the curtain.

And here is the food. By the way, "shio ramen" stands for "salty noodles" and the soup was a bit too salty for my taste. Hakodate specialty ramen, though, is made with squid, but I have yet to try it.

Hakodate: walking around/

There are many tourist attractions in Hakodate within a walking distance from the train station. For those who come early for a meeting or a conference, the daily market opens at 5 in the morning (once you exit the train station, take a right and walk along the first street from the sea). It is a good place to get breakfast or souvenirs, as well as to see what this area is famous for.

The market sells a lot of fish. Almost every fish store sells squid. Squid is the symbol of Hakodate, the city even has its own special squid dance. If there is a group of people on a festival in Northern Japan dressed as squid or have squid symbols on their clothes, then it is more than likely that they are from Hakodate.

Some places sell live squid, they keep it in a special reservoir with sea water.

Further down the road there is a place called Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. This shopping place does look like a bunch of warehouses from the outside, but each of the buildings (there are 6 buildings total) is very cozy on the inside and have many different souvenir shops, pastry shops, and restaurants.

The same area has a small square with four restaurants. Customers have a choice between ramen noodles, Chinese food, curry, and something else.

The ropeway to mount Hakodate is located nearby as well. The ticket is not too expensive, and getting to the top of the mountain takes about three minutes.

Enjoy the views of Hakodate port while walking back towards the train station.

City of Hakodate/

Hakodate is the city located on the southern side of the northern-most prefecture of Japan (Hokkaido). It is famous because it was the first city in Japan to open its port to the foreign ships. The influence of foreign cultures is noticeable in this city, more so than in any other place in Japan that I have ever visited.

Once off the train, visitors are greeted with such a reminder of where they came to.

Inside the train station itself, there is a huge stone mosaic that displays the history of Hakodate.

This plaque shows  the small version of the mosaic.

Some street map signs are in multiple languages. This one, in particular, is in Japanese, English, Russian, and Chinese.

Part of the city is located on the hill. The streets that lead up the hill have simple names: first slope, second slope, and so on.

The street sign shows what slope number this street is, and also tells a little bit about what the street leads up to.

A walk up the hill reveals a gorgeous view of the port.

There are other streets, like in any Japanese town, without slopes or pretty views.

But the fall here is very charming.
