A famous restaurant in Hakodate/

In my last post, I wrote about the square with four restaurants. One of them, the ramen place, is quite popular. The line to get in around lunch or dinner time can be more than 20 people, and the service there is pretty fast and there is plenty of seating inside.

On the picture a potential client is studying the menu. Entrance to the restaurant is hidden by the curtain.

And here is the food. By the way, "shio ramen" stands for "salty noodles" and the soup was a bit too salty for my taste. Hakodate specialty ramen, though, is made with squid, but I have yet to try it.

A pizza restaurant/

A new pizza restaurant opened in vicinity and I stopped by to see what's so special about it. I like how they have their process organized. They are only making pizza, but the kitchen is made so that anyone can see the entire process from start to finish.

Everything begins with a dough.

Then the sauce goes on.

Then cheese, basil, a bit of olive oil, bacon or pepperoni or something else.

And then it goes on a special paddle and in the oven.

And here is the result.

What is this ring for on the table in a restaurant?

Okinawa dining -- a steakhouse/

There is another place that we visited in Okinawa that is really worth noting. One night we went out for dinner to a steakhouse restaurant. Although I would not call this restaurant a steakhouse, it was more of a grill-type place. The idea is not original: there is a person in front of the grill who cooks dinner for up to six people at the same time. Nevertheless, the idea is implemented with excellence. The menu looked great, pricy at first (3500 yen per person), but it was well worth it. The price of dinner included the appetizer, soup (you can see it in a heart-shaped bamboo or wooden plate; it was a pumpkin soup, sort of a desert up front), the main dish, desert, a great environment (the restaurant pretty much overlooks the sea) and the show of one person cooking it all. This picture shows a cook performing his art.

In the beginning, the cook brings out the stuff. Here is a part of our order:

Then everyone gets to share the same appetizer -- grilled vegetables. You can also see the prawns on the grill as well.

This was one of the juiciest and tastiest hamburgers that I have ever eaten.

Squid is usually chewy and tasteless. This squid was delicious and not at all chewy.

This is bitter melon. It looks more like a wrinkly cucumber. Well, it is bitter... In Russian it is called the "Chinese bitter pumpkin," so the Russian-speaking people also think it is bitter. This fruit (yes, it is a type of a fruit) is very popular in Asia.

After the main meal we were lead to a bar where we were offered complementary tea and ice cream and a bite of cheesecake. I took a picture of the entryway into the restaurant, it had many business cards on the walls. The other thing to note is the candle on a pile of candle wax, that looked cool.

Dishes return windows/

Majority of the fast food places here use unique, non-disposable dishes. So if you eat at such a place, you return the dishes into the special window that is located to either of the sides of the main restaurant window.

When you bring back the dish, they say "thank you."

A roadside restaurant/

Just took this picture because the restaurant looked nice. Not many parking places around it though :)

With a push of a button.../

In some restaurants in Japan, you don't need to wait for a waiter to show up at your table. The tables are equipped with buttons. Push the buttons and a waiter will come in a minute. The closest one to this that I have ever seen in a restaurant is a system in the "Bubba Gump" chain, where you have to flip the signs on the table. But the button makes it so much easier!
