Happy Bag/

Most of the stores in Japan are closed on January 1, and big shopping malls take this opportunity to hold sales. After visiting a shrine on January 1, people go shopping. To make things easier, stores offer "happy bags," which is a prepackaged bag or a box of items at a discounted price. Each store that participate in the sales event offer a few of their specialty items. Customers get hardly any choice, but it is very convenient to not have to browse the crowded store in search of items. To further help attract customers, happy bags are conveniently placed at the entrances.

Children's day/День детей

Japan celebrates the children's day on May 5 of every year. It used to be the Boy's day, but now it is the children's day. For the holiday, the houses and streets are decorated with carps, like on the picture below. The carp symbolizes a leader, because carps can swim against the stream, and, according to Chinese tales, carps can turn into dragons.

Girl's day/День девочек

Girl's day is celebrated every year on March 3. It is also called "hinamatsuri," which literally means "doll festival." A doll display is the most traditional decoration of this day, and the picture below illustrates the most traditional set up for the doll display. Some families own very expensive old dolls, some families don't own any, but all daughters have at least one picture with a doll display. This article on Wikipedia has more details about the doll display.

Christmas in Japan/

Christmas traditions are different in Japan because Christianity is not very popular. The biggest tradition (at least in northeastern Japan) is for unmarried couples to have a dinner and a cake. The cakes come from pastry shops, but dinners come from KFC. KFC makes special Christmas sets available for pre-order long before Christmas (on the picture below the advertisement is right outside the store).

Another Christmas tradition is to ask a girl to get married, but it is also popular to ask that on her birthday.

Holiday Preparations/

Obon, a big Japanese holiday began this Saturday (August 13) and will last five days through Thursday. It is the time when people get back to the family to honor the ancestors and take a couple days off to spend with each other. Entire country slows down: businesses have limited staffing, it's hard to get train tickets, and so on. It is nice though -- this is probably the hottest time of the year in Japan and school is about to start back up, so it is a great chance to go back home for a week and visit.

The chain supermarket stores make it easy for the families by offering their seasonal special trays of food for sale. The trays have bigger food variety, most of it is already cooked so that the family can spend more time with each other rather than doing chores.

Valentine's Day candy sale/

A regular grocery store, seasonal display section, Valentine's Day display. Various brands of chocolates, and most of them are not usually sold at this store at any other time, so this makes the sale a bit more special. Any box of candy looks delicious.
