Road tax/

Spring in Japan is not only the time to enjoy the views of sakura, but also the time to pay the road tax. The owner of every car must pay money to the government. The tax for 2012 is determined using the following tables:

5,500 yen
 Private truck
4,000 yen
Business truck
3,000 yen

Here are two cars with yellow license plates. They are not very big.

There are tax breaks for so called "eco" cars. To be classified as such, the car must have a sticker with stars on the rear windshield. The amount of the discount varies from 25 to 75 percent and can repeat for not more than 5 years. Here is an example of a sticker:

This means that for a basic model Toyota Camry with a 2.5 liter engine, an owner must pay yearly at least 45000 yen (if there are no discounts).

  1. Do they have property tax and sales tax too?

  2. Yes, they have. The sales tax is 5% country-wide (with plans to increase it to 10% soon). There are property taxes too, but the amount depends on the size of the house, type of the house, size of land and so on.
