Aomori Nebuta festival (day parade)/

The fence is decorated with apples, it means that we are very close to the Aomori city, which is considered to be the apple capital of Japan.

We are going to see the Nebuta festival parade (official web site, in English). In short, Nebuta is a float built on a wooden base and decorated with figures made of Japanese paper. It is lit up from the inside and putting the float on the water symbolizes the purification of the soul by sending the evil spirits out to sea.

The festivities always start on August 1, regardless of what day of the week it is, with an evening celebration. Then there is a night parade every night until August 7. On August 7, the last day of the festival, there is the day parade, then the jury decides what floats were the best this year and the festival concludes with putting the best floats on boats and making them float around for many spectators to see along with the beautiful fireworks display. I will have a series of posts about the festival, and I will start with the day parade that happened in 2010.

Pretty ladies open the parade. This one is miss Aomori.

And these are miss Nebuta

Then the Hakodate representatives join the parade. Hakodate is the city in the northernmost Japanese prefecture, Hokkaido. They are easily recognized by squid, their mascot.

They are doing the squid dance.

And then the parade starts.

Drawing with rice (tanbo art) 2012/

I already wrote about tanbo art at Inakadate village last year. In 2012, Inakadate is welcoming its citizens and guests the twentieth year in a row with a new rice art piece. As usual, the excitement starts at the bottom of the field, when it is hard to tell what we will see.

The view is totally amazing. This year the left side of the field depicts a Buddhist bodhisattva Hibo-Kannon. The sign on the bottom is the name of the place (Inakadate) as well as the type of rice used -- Tsugaru Roman.

The right field shows Acala, also known in Japan as FUDO-MYOOJINN, which literally means "immovable." This buddhist guardian deity helps enlighten people. The saying on the bottom of the field is a wish of health and wellness to the entire Japan from Aomori. This year's theme is still inspired by the earthquake and tsunami of 2011. The left part of the picture is a wish for a good afterlife for the victims, and the picture on the right is the wish of wellness to Japan.

No other fields in the close proximity have rice drawings on them.

And here is the view at the entire field.

The field is pretty big, making this art is a lot of work.

Train day preparations/

Japanese cities and towns popularize railroad transport among the young population by celebrating the railroad day once each year. Here is the preparation for the celebration held in Hakodate (Hokkaido Prefecture).

Sounds just like a real railroad.

Cape Shiriya/

Japan is located on many islands. Cape Shiriya is located on the north of the biggest one, the Honshu island. Here is the map (courtesy of Google Maps):

Here is what it looks like:

There are some wild horses here too:

Fog/Туман

The fog in northern Japan can appear quite fast and in an unpredictable manner. Sometimes it even feels like a cloud dropped down to the ground. However, it all may disappear just as fast.
