Palace of Versailles/Версаль

We have arrived to the Versailles station. This is where the Palace of Versailles is located. The Palace itself is located almost two miles away from the station, but it's in a walking distance. There are other means of getting to the Palace, they are available just outside the train station.

Для туристов особо не проблема пройтись пешком, а если непогода или нет желания гулять, то от станции курсируют всякие виды транспорта прямо до дворца, стоит только выйти из здания вокзала.

The Palace, nowadays a park and a museum, used to be a hunting place, and then it was extended into a castle. This was an alternate place of living for the French Royalty outside of Paris. The lines to get inside are pretty long. And tourists have to wait in two lines: one to get a ticket and the other one to get inside. Little hint: if you have an American Express card, don't wait in the ticket line; go straight into the place where the tickets are sold. Before cashiers there are automated machines that sell tickets, majority of the people are waiting to talk to an actual person.

Чтобы попасть внутрь, надо отстоять очередь за билетами и очередь во дворец. Но если есть карточка American Express, то можно пройти мимо очереди за билетами и подойти к автоматам, которые продают билеты по карточке. Большинство народу стоит в очереди к кассирам.

Let's walk around inside. The best part about this museum is that the tour line organized in a way such that the tourists see everything if they just follow one path. And there are things to see.

Monmartre/Монмартр

Monmartre is a hill north of Paris that gives its name to the surrounding district. This place is famous for its night life as well as for many historic landmarks. The most visible landmark is the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, a beautiful church located on the hill.

Монмартр это холм на севере Парижа, который также дал имя прилегающему району. Это место знаменито своей ночной жизнью, а также многочисленными историческими памятниками. Базилика Святого Сердца Парижа является самым заметным памятником. Это действующая церковь, которая находится на холме Монмартр.

This place has a stunning view of Paris.

But let's walk around this district. Life does not stop here at night; rather opposite: it gets busier. Many restaurants and shop open their doors. The streets are narrow so numerous visitors may get shoved in the store by crowds. But it's a nice place to walk around.

Here, for example, this board claims that on March 30, 1814, cossacks used the word "bistro" the first time. Russian cossacks conquered Paris around that time (Napoleon attacked Russia first), and when they took over Paris they apparently ate here quite a bit. The word "bystro" in Russian language means "fast," so they were just asking for a faster service. But the word "bistro" now

This place, besides being a cafe with a pretty high satisfaction factor, is a famous place where artists used to hang out.

This is a memorial to a singer named Dalida.

And this is a sculpture by Jean Marais (a very famous French actor), it's called "A man walking through a wall". It is devoted to a writer named Marcel Aymé.

And this is a view at the the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris from the southern borders of Monmartre.

Notre Dame de Paris/Собор Парижской Богоматери

Notre Dame de Paris is a beautiful cathedral and is a symbol of Paris. In front of the cathedral there is the 0th kilometer, the place where the distances are measured to and from. Let's look around.

Собор Парижской Богоматери является действующей церковью, а также одним из символов Парижа. Нулевой километр Парижа находится также перед собором. Осмотримся.

The Louvre, Paris/Лувр, Париж

A short note on the Louvre. It is a huge museum and everyone goes there to find something they like. It is very pretty and historical-looking on the outside.

Небольшая заметка про Лувр. Небольшая потому, что музей огромен и каждый находит в музее для себя что-то свое. Здание музея исторично само по себе.

Ein bissen essen, ein bissen trinken, ein bissen sprechen

The title of this post ("Ein bissen essen, ein bissen trinken, ein bissen sprechen") reflets the way many families like celebrating their New Year. It translates to "eat a little, drink a little, talk a little". Let's visit a German house that follows this formula. The tree is decorated, TV is on, candles lit, the house is ready.

Hey, look at that, a griddle, reminds a lot of Japan. Except this one is lifted and it has little pans so that everyone can make their own dish. So we fry on the top, and bake on the bottom at the same time.

Настольный гриль, прямо как в Японии. Только в этом гриле есть еще и отделение под грилем, там маленькие лопатки на которые можно складывать всякую еду и она зарумянивается под грилем.

Cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, blood sausage, potatoes, can't beat that!

В-общем все ограничивается фантазией автора и содержимым холодильника. В этот раз у нас кровяная колбаса, лук, грибы, сыр, помидоры и картошка.

And then, closer to midnight, fireworks everywhere. They start randomly just after dark, and between midnight and 1:30 am the sky is lit up everywhere.

Ну а ближе к полуночи Германия начинает запускать фейерверки. Примерно с 12:15 ночи до половины второго уже точно не заснуть.

And morning of January 1st is when there is still trash outside. Just for a couple of hours, the remainder of the fireworks will get picked up soon.

1-го января -- пожалуй единственный день когда мусор на улице это в порядке вещей. Через несколько часов все опять будет чисто.

The morning part of celebrating New Year is probably even better: no need to stay up late, no need to wait, everything is relaxed. The best part of course is the breakfast. Not pictured: fried eggs hot from the stove, baked sausages wrapped in bacon covered in cheese, boiled sausage, coffee.

Праздничный завтрак в первый день Нового Года имеет свои преимущества: не надо не спать допоздна, можно начинать во сколько удобно и сидеть за столом допоздна. А еще можно поспать после обеда и продолжить за ужином. Но я отвлекся. На картинке виден гостеприимный стол. Не вошли в картинку жареные яйца с грибами, запеченые сосиски в беконе с сыром, вареные сардельки.

And bread, of course. All kinds.

Хлеб, булочки, кренделя. Всякие разные. Как же без них в Германии.
