A couple of observation/

1. Hardly any of the local stores take credit cards. The locals seem to pay with cash only, or they have some of their own types of credit cards that they can use. I tried withdrawing some money from a MasterCard using a local ATM, got denied. Then at the 100-yen store I got a mini-pocket wallet for change, because the paper currency comes in 1000 yen or above.

2. Cell phones. I thought that Japan would have the smallest cell phones ever. Quite the opposite, actually. Many of the cell phones here are big and bulky, but that is all because they like watching TV on their cell phones. It takes a while here to get a cell phone. I ordered mine at 4 pm and they told me it would be ready the following day. I told them I'd be there at 10 am (right when they open), they said that it'd be better if I came after 11. According to a person I talked to here, their cellphones is their identity, and some banks can pull the information about a person by their phone number. Not sure how much of it is true, but I slowly start to believe that.

3. Work hours. The local stores and services do not open before 10 am. I am not sure what they do in the mornings, but the sun comes up pretty early here in summer (around 3:30 am).
