For a moment, it seemed like we were under attack by German Forces.

Казалось что нас атакуют немецкие коммандо. Дружно идут, песню поют.

But they were singing something and marching together. Oh, it's May 1, a German marching team was in the neighborhood. No big deal.

Оказалось это просто маршировально-песенная команда. Первое мая на дворе, они так решили отметить.

Cobblestone/Брусчатка

Cobblestone walkways and roads are in many places in Europe. Not only it is beautiful and reminds us of the old times, it is also very functional. Say, for example, there is a tear in the village's fiber Internet connection. No need to dig up all the roads, just undo a couple of stones.

Брусчаткой выложены многие улицы и площади в Европе. Это не только красиво и напоминает о былых временах, но и очень удобно. К примеру, порвался оптоволоконный кабел в деревне, так не надо перекапывать дороги, достаточно просто разобрать участок прорыва.

Fixed the cable, then fixed the pavement quickly.

Починили кабель, быстро все заложили обратно.

Bundesliga soccer game/Футбольная игра Бундеслиги

Soccer is sport number 1 in Germany. People of all ages play, villages have their teams and  championships, there are soccer fields in the middle of nowhere so that people can come out and play. These are the pictures of the top German soccer league -- Bundesliga. There is a stadium in the middle of nowhere, plenty of parking, access to highway. The stadium can fit about 30 thousand people. Traffic around the place starts piling up a couple of hours before the game, but a couple of hours after the game traffic is back to normal.

The game affects different people differently. Some are cold and complain about the prices of drinks, while some are so focused on the game that they forget everything.

Даже не буду описывать что такое футбол в Германии. Играют все и везде, в каждом селе есть сельская команда и каждая такая команда мечтает взять кубок водокачки. Раз идти, так уже идти на матч высшего дивизиона Бундеслиги. Стадион (в Зинсхайме) стоит посреди поля. Вокруг -- парковки. Стадион вмещает тыщ 30 народу и всем хватает парковки. Безусловно автобан до игры и после игры встает, но в принципе не так уж и плохо. Часа через полтора после окончания игры можно проехать спокойно.

Сама игра на разных людей производит разное впечатление. Кому-то холодно и 3 Евро за стакан чего нибудь попить или выпить -- это много, а кому-то азарт игры и накал страстей помогают забыть все на свете.

After the game, the team (Bayern Munich) comes to their fans to thank them for their support. Fans were very organized and chanted the same song throughout the entire game (90 minutes). Non-stop.

После игры команда (Мюнхенская Бавария) подбежала поблагодарить своих болельшиков. Они (болельщики) на протяжении всего матча слаженно горланили песню команды.

Christmas markets/Рождественские рынки

Christmas markets in Germany start at the end of November. Big cities hold them continuously through Christmas (even though after Christmas they hold "New Year's" markets and then post-New-Year's until about January 6), little towns and villages hold weekend celebrations. These photos are a mixture of multiple markets, which start to blur together after a while. The food and drinks, however, are always fresh and hot (or cold, depends on your choice). These pictures are from the 2014 market in Dusseldorf and Trier, as well as from 2015 markets in Speyer and Kaiserslautern.

Рождественские рынки в Германии открываются в конце ноября. В больших городах они работают каждый день до Рождества (хотя после 25-го декабря они называются новогодними рынками, а потом еще после-новогодними и закрываются где-то к 6-му января), а в маленьких деревнях иногда проходят всего лишь в течении пары выходных. Эти фотографии с разных рынков (2014 Дюссельдорф и Триер, 2015 Шпайер и Кайзерслаутерн), но все рынки мало чем отличаются друг от друга.

Food is everywhere. And the food is not the purpose of the market, but more of a point to refuel to go have fun further with friends. Food is good though.

Везде еда. Всякая разная. Причем еда в основном чтоб быстро перекусить и идти гулять дальше с друзьями. Но все очень вкусно.

The markets usually take place in the central square, so not only it's interesting, but also pretty.

Рынки обычно проходят на центральных площадях старого города. Поэтому здесь не только интересно, но и красиво.

Some vendors sell cool things. These could be the very first ever 3D pictures.

В некоторых местах продаются интересные вещи. Вот это, например, вполне могут быть первейшие 3D снимки.

 

 

Here they are frying ham, potatoes and mushrooms on huge iron pans.

Вот тут на огроменных железных сковородках жарят ветчину, картошку и грибы. 

Holiday for the entire family. Adults get to drink "gluhwein," which is a hot slightly-alcoholic drink. Kids get their version, a non-alcoholic warm drink too. Everything is sold in nice holiday cups that have the year and a place imprinted on them. For every drink, every customer pays a deposit between 2 and 3 Euro, and if anyone wants to keep their cup -- no hard feelings, they just walk away with it. If you return the cup, you get the money back.

Праздник для всей семьи. Взрослым дают "глювайн", горячий и немного-алкогольный напиток. Дети могут пить тоже горячий, но неалкогольный компот. Горячие напитки продаются в сувенирных кружках, но за каждую порцию в кружечке придется доплатить 2-3 Евро. Это удобно -- понравилась кружечка, не надо ничего искать где купить. Просто пошел дальше. А не понравилась, вернул кружечку и получил залог обратно.

And here is an interesting thing: melted cheese sandwich. So the black L-shaped thing on the counter is a heater that melts the cheese right underneath it. The lady is making a sandwich and preparing to put cheese on it.

А вот тут продаются интересные бутерброды с плавленым сыром. Черная палка на прилавке греет и плавит сыр, который находится прямо под ней. Девушка готовит основу для бутерброда.

And then she puts the melted cheese on top of the sandwich.

А потом она соскребает плавленый сыр на него.

Pancakes for sale on the right, the dude on the left sells sucking candy. He is dressed appropriately for the winter.

Here you can get some hot Belgian waffles with a choice of strawberry/cherry/caramel/maple syrup or chocolate.The cost is 200 roubles, which is less than 4 dollars at today's exchange rate. Also you can get a hot tea (for a dollar), tea with lemon, ginger, and sea buckthorn (it's a type of berry, has nothing to do with any seas, costs about 2 dollars), or tea with the flavor of wild berries and pine cones (that's what it says! costs about 2 dollars). Finally, you can get a "Christmas drink", for four dollars.

Также есть чаи в ассортименте: просто чай за 50 рублей, чай с лимоном, имбирем и облепихой за 100 рублей; чай с лесными ягодами и еловыми шишками тоже за 100 рублей; а также "Рождественский напиток" за 200.

As you can see on the picture, the cup is not as festive as in Germany, but the wine is warm and pancakes are good.

Stonehenge/Стоунхендж

There is an old sacred place just about an hour-and-a-half away from London. No one still knows exactly how it was used. Let's go check it out. Oh, here it is, on the right.

В полутора часах езды от Лондона находятся развалины очень древнего храма, и до сих пор неизвестно как конкретно он использовался. Поехали посмотрим что к чему. Вот он, справа.

And here is one of the famous guards. The guards themselves are not famous, but their uniforms, mostly tall hats, are the source of attention.

А вот те самые знаменитые охранники замка. Сами охранники ничем не знамениты, но их форма, а в особенности высокая шапка, притягивает внимание.

And this is what the palace looks like from the garden side. The palace is open for visits two months out of the year and anyone can come inside and feel like any other person who came to see the Royals. It's very pretty on the inside, lots of pictures and beautiful interiors, but no photographs are allowed.

А вот так дворец выглядит с внутренней стороны, со стороны сада. Дворец открыт для посещения два месяца в году, так что любой может зайти и побыть на месте любых других людей кто приходит посетить членов королевской семьи. Внутри очень красиво, интерьер, картины, но нельзя фотографировать.

And here are some more guards. They don't exactly look as the palace guards, and these are on horses, and they are not exactly going to the palace. Nevertheless, they are horse-back riding in the middle of the busy city, holding the traffic. There must be a reason...

А вот еще какие-то охранники. Немножко другие, но на лошадях, и едут не совсем в замок. Но вот так, на лошадях посреди города, задерживая движение. Чопорно и по-английски, в-общем.
