Kokeshi doll museum/

There is a kokeshi doll museum in a little town of Kuroishi in Aomori Prefecture. Kokeshi doll is a traditional Japanese souvenir.

The dolls vary in size, but in this museum there are no same two dolls as each of them is decorated individually by a kokeshi master.

Dolls are of different shapes and decorated with different types of patterns. Specialists and hobbyists can tell in which area of Japan the master studied the kokeshi art by a doll's looks.

This is approximately how a kokeshi shop used to look in the old days:

Kokeshi masters also used to make spintops.

Nowadays kokeshi are made of other materials:

Here are some dolls that are painted in a non-traditional manner. Still hand-painted though.

This museum also hosts Daruma display. Daruma is sort of a good luck charm to the Japanese.

The museum also has kokeshi dolls for sale, but they are not cheap. 10,000 yen is about $125 using today's exchange rate.
