Ginza street/Улица Гинза

This is the Ginza street, the Japanese fashion district and the place with the expensive restaurants. At times, it does not even feel like Japan there: the streets are wide, the buildings are tall, and the store signs are not in Japanese.

Это улица Гинза, центр японской моды и дорогих ресторанов. Иногда даже кажется что это не Япония: здесь широкие улицы, высокие здания, и вывески не на японском языке.

Asakusa/Асакуса

Asakusa is a district in Tokyo with many shrines and a street with many small souvenir stores. Even though shrines are located everywhere in Japan, Asakusa has many of the located very close to each other, and so if you want to view and enjoy the local ancient architecture and traditions, then Asakusa is a place to be. To my shame, I could hardly understand what was going on. There was something smoking in a big jar in the middle of the street, there were people praying at small shrines, big shrines, so I cannot tell many stories about the place. I did, however, enjoy being over there. It was a spectacular site, if no people were around, I'd probably feel like I was in the ancient Japan.

В Японии несложно найти храм где бы ты ни был, но в Асакусе храмов много разных сразу и все они недалеко друг от друга. Так что если хотите ощутить древнюю историю, то надо ехать в Асакусу. К сожалению я не могу рассказать никаких интересных фактов об этом месте, там очень много всего происходит сразу, курят благовония, молятся, гуляют, покупают сувениры и т.д. В этом месте атмосфера древней храмовой Японии, так что если бы не было никого вокруг, можно было бы легко забыть что на дворе двадцать первый век.

Inside one of the shrines there was an option to ask for the upcoming fortune. Here is how it was done: drop the money into the small shrine, then get the long (about one foot long) hexagon-shaped can and start shaking it. Once done shaking, pull out a small wooden poll, it has a number on it. Find the drawer with the number, pull out the fortune sheet.

Внутри одного из храмов можно было спросить о грядущей удаче. Происходит это так: кидаешь денежку, потом берешь большую железную шестигранную банку, трясешь ее хорошенько, и вытаскиваешь соломинку. На соломинке написан номер, вытаскиваешь предсказание из ящичка с номером. Ну а там уже написано что будет.

Tokyo apartments/Квартира в Токио

This tiny apartment in Tokyo costs 247,000 yen (almost $3,000) a month to rent. It is 313 square feet in the newly-built Ikebukuro duplex tower. They also prorate the apartments, so I got a nice hotel room with kitchen for a very reasonable price. The apartment is very close to the Ikebukuro station, which is one of the major Tokyo subway stations. There are grocery stores and the bars and restaurants in the vicinity gather lots of people on the weekend so there is music coming from everywhere and no need to go to far to go out.

Арендная плата за эту крохотную квартиру в Токио составляет 247000 иен (примерно 90000 рублей). 29,1 квадратных метра в новостройке, которая называется Икебукуро дуплекс. Домоуправление сдает квартиры по дневному тарифу, так что я получил отличную комнату в отеле с кухней за приемлемую цену. Квартира находится в двух минутах ходьбы от оживленной станции токийского метро, Икебукуро. Маленькие продовольственные магазины недалеко, а бары и рестораны привлекают много посетителей по выходным, так что веселье витает в воздухе, и не надо далеко ходить чтоб отлично провести время.

Okinawa dining -- a steakhouse/Ужин в стейкхаусе на Окинаве

There is another place that we visited in Okinawa that is really worth noting. One night we went out for dinner to a steakhouse restaurant. Although I would not call this restaurant a steakhouse, it was more of a grill-type place. The idea is not original: there is a person in front of the grill who cooks dinner for up to six people at the same time. Nevertheless, the idea is implemented with excellence. The menu looked great, pricy at first (3500 yen per person), but it was well worth it. The price of dinner included the appetizer, soup (you can see it in a heart-shaped bamboo or wooden plate; it was a pumpkin soup, sort of a desert up front), the main dish, desert, a great environment (the restaurant pretty much overlooks the sea) and the show of one person cooking it all. This picture shows a cook performing his art. 

На Окинаве было еще одно место, на которое стоит обратить внимание. Одним вечером мы поехали отужинать в ресторан специализирующийся на стейках. Идея ресторана не нова: повар готовит ужин на шестерых человек (или меньше) прямо перед ними. Тем не менее, в этом ресторане идея исполнена блестяще. Меню заинтересовало, но сначала цены показались завышенными (3500 иен на человека). Затем оказалось что в цену входила закуска, суп (на картинке видно суп в тарелке в форме валентинки; суп был тыквенный, сладкий, что-то вроде десерта на закуску), основное блюдо, десерт, уютная обстановка (из окон было видно море), и целый спектакль приготовления вкусного ужина. На картинке видно как артист творит искусство.

Then everyone gets to share the same appetizer -- grilled vegetables. You can also see the prawns on the grill as well.

Затем всем выдали по чуть-чуть закуски -- овощи жаренные на гриле. И уже была пора жарить большие креветки.

This was one of the juiciest and tastiest hamburgers that I have ever eaten.

Это был один из самых сочных и вкусных гамбургеров что я когда-либо ел.

Squid is usually chewy and tasteless. This squid was delicious and not at all chewy.

Обычно жареные кальмары жуются с трудом и какие-то безвкусные. Этот кальмар был великолепно приготовлен, было очень вкусно.

This is bitter melon. It looks more like a wrinkly cucumber. Well, it is bitter... In Russian it is called the "Chinese bitter pumpkin," so the Russian-speaking people also think it is bitter. This fruit (yes, it is a type of a fruit) is very popular in Asia.

Это гоя. Еще этот фрукт называют китайская горькая тыква. Выглядит как огурец, только очень много морщин. Что сказать... горько. Но очень распространен в Азии. С английского название этого фрукта переводится как "горькая дыня", так что англоязычным людям тоже горько.

After the main meal we were lead to a bar where we were offered complementary tea and ice cream and a bite of cheesecake. I took a picture of the entryway into the restaurant, it had many business cards on the walls. The other thing to note is the candle on a pile of candle wax, that looked cool.

После ужина нам предложили десерт: маленькую кружечку чая, чуть-чуть мороженого (там на два укуса было), и (тоже на два укуса) сырного торта. Я сфотографировал вход в ресторан, он был интересно оформлен всякими разными визитками. Еще заслуживает внимание свечка которая горит на куче воска от других свечей, выглядело очень необычно.

Okinawa, Gyokusendo caves/Окинава, пещеры Гёкусендо

Those who likes caves will appreciate the Gyokusendo caves. This place is spectacular, the tunnel goes for over twenty-seven hundred feet and a different sight opens up every time you turn. At times it feels like it is raining, so I had to constantly remind myself that I was in a cave. The water is always dripping from the ceiling, that is the nature's way of creating stalactites and stalagmites. Therefore, the air humidity in the cave is up to 99%. Пещеры Гёкусендо не оставят равнодушными любителей подземных приключений. Для посетителей открыто около 850 метров пещер, и каждый поворот головы открывает новые великолепные виды. Иногда казалось что идет дождь, поэтому мне приходилось напоминать себе что я внутри пещеры. Вода постоянно капает со сводов, так образуются сталактиты и сталагмиты. Влажность воздуха достигает 99%. Busena resort, underwater observatory/Курорт Бусена, павильон подводного наблюдения

There is another attraction worth visiting at Busena resort. The tickets are sold at the same place as for the glass-bottom boat trip. There is a tower about eighth of a mile out in the sea:

Есть еще одно место, которое стоит посетить на курорте Бусена. Кстати, билеты и на лодку и сюда продаются в одном и том же месте. Так вот, примерно в двухстах метрах от берега моря стоит павильон в виде башни:

Inside the tower, there is a stairway that takes you down about ten feet under the surface of the sea. There are windows around the perimeter, so you can see the very bottom of the sea, with all their dwellers. This is how it looks from the inside, like a submarine:

 Внутри башни винтовая лестница, которая ведет вниз, до уровня четырех метров под уровнем моря. Вся красота находится внутри. По периметру башни сделаны иллюминаторы, и видно морское дно и рыбок, так что ощущения почти как в подводной лодке. Выглядит все вот так:

The stairs are a little tight, but the view is great.

Ступеньки немного круты и узковаты, но это стоит того.

Also, on the way to and from the tower, you can buy some fish food from the vending machine. I don't have a picture, but it is a cake-looking box made of something edible (by fish) with the fish food on the inside. You break a box, feed the fish with the insides of the box, then you break the box further down and throw the box into the water as well. No need to have a trash can. Fish takes care of it all:

По пути в башню стоят автоматы по продаже рыбьего корма. Корм сделан в виде коробочки с гранулами внутри. Разламываешь коробочку напополам, высыпаешь корм рыбкам, а потом ломаешь саму коробочку и выбрасываешь в море. Коробочка тоже сделана из рыбьего корма, так что не надо искать урну.

Busena resort, glass-bottom boat ride/Курорт Бусена, поездка на лодке с прозрачным дном

Busena resort of Okinawa hosted the G8 summit in 2000. Now it is a very scenic place that has a couple of expensive hotels, beautiful views, clear waters with lots of fish, and a couple of things to do for tourists. I will start with the ride on a glass-bottom boat. It is about a mile walk from the parking lot to the boat (a mini-bus is available), so if you decide to walk along the coast, you can see that the fish is not afraid to get very close to the shore.

На курорте Бусена в Окинаве проходил саммит большой восьмерки в 2000-м году. Сейчас это очень живописное место с дорогими отелями, красивыми видами, чистой водой с огромным количеством рыбы, и несколькими аттракционами для туристов. Я начну рассказ с описания поездки на лодке с прозрачным дном. От парковки до причала идти примерно полтора километра (там ходит небольшой автобус), но если идти вдоль берега, то можно заметить что рыба совсем не боится подплывать близко.

Here is the pier. There are two boats available, black and white. There is also the hotel on the picture in the very back, this hotel hosted the G8 summit. The part of water separated with blue buoys is the beach area. I already wrote about how the beaches are designated. The only difference of this beach to the others is that this one does not have the wave breakers. This beach, however, has one advantage over the others: you could rent jet skis.

Это лодочный причал. Всего работают две лодки, белая и черная. Вдали можно видеть отель, это тот самый отель где проходил саммит. А синими буйками огорожен пляж, я уже писал про организацию пляжей на Окинаве. Единственное отличие этого пляжа это то, что здесь не сделаны волнорезы. Преимуществом этого пляжа было то, что можно было взять в аренду водный мотоцикл.

I was quite intrigued, how can a boat can have a glass bottom? It was like a window in the floor, people sit along the sides of the boat, and stare into the bottom of the ocean.

Я себе не представлял как это у лодки может быть прозрачное дно. Оказалось что в дне лодки сделаны как бы окна, люди сидят по бортам лодки и смотрят в дно.

The waters are not deep and for some reasons there was a lot of fish swimming in the "windows."

Там где нас катали, было неглубоко, и по каким-то причинам рыбок в "окнах" было много.

Then we realized that the boat captain was throwing some kind of fish food in the water. That is why there was plenty of fish to see. However, the bottom of the sea looked beautiful and there were other interesting species that did not care for the fish food. This next picture has a sea star.

Потом оказалось что капитан лодки регулярно подкармливает рыбу, поэтому рыба не то что не боится лодки, а еще и гоняется за ней. Тем не менее, морское дно было очень красивым, и там были другие представители морской фауны, которых рыбий корм особо не интересовал. Например на следующей фотографии видно морскую звезду.

And this picture shows a very interesting worm-looking thing. This is a sea cucumber.

А на этой картинке показан еще один интересный вид морских обитателей. Вот это, прям в самом центре, это трепанг.
