Hachinohe-city Celebration of Three Shrines/

Hachinohe Festival of Three Shrines (八戸三社大祭) happens at the same time as other nebuta festivals in Aomori Prefecture (August 2-7), even though the floats are not made of paper. The festival originated in Hachinohe-city almost three hundred years ago, when monks needed to move three portable shrines from one place to the other. They also decided to do it with a bang and thus came the event that nowadays attracts people from all over Aomori.

Everything is as usual: lots of people, delicious street food, but everything is organized and calm.

Most of the floats symbolize folk scenes. This one below, however, depicts characters from a cartoon that teaches kids to be polite.

Hachinohe-city is a welcoming host for the celebration.

If you do decide to go to this holiday, the easiest way to get there from Hachinohe train station is to take the local train to Hon-Hachinohe (本八戸) station, where the celebration is actually taking place.
