There are many tourist attractions in Hakodate within a walking distance from the train station. For those who come early for a meeting or a conference, the daily market opens at 5 in the morning (once you exit the train station, take a right and walk along the first street from the sea). It is a good place to get breakfast or souvenirs, as well as to see what this area is famous for.
The market sells a lot of fish. Almost every fish store sells squid. Squid is the symbol of Hakodate, the city even has its own special squid dance. If there is a group of people on a festival in Northern Japan dressed as squid or have squid symbols on their clothes, then it is more than likely that they are from Hakodate.
Some places sell live squid, they keep it in a special reservoir with sea water.
Further down the road there is a place called Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse. This shopping place does look like a bunch of warehouses from the outside, but each of the buildings (there are 6 buildings total) is very cozy on the inside and have many different souvenir shops, pastry shops, and restaurants.
The same area has a small square with four restaurants. Customers have a choice between ramen noodles, Chinese food, curry, and something else.
The ropeway to mount Hakodate is located nearby as well. The ticket is not too expensive, and getting to the top of the mountain takes about three minutes.
Enjoy the views of Hakodate port while walking back towards the train station.
Just interesting notes and pictures from our travels.
