Vanity license plates in EU/Автомобильные номера на выбор в Шенгенской зоне

Not much variety with vanity plates in Europe. First 1-2 letters always designate the place where the care is registered. Then up to maybe 6 or 7 other symbols, with letters before numbers. And, of course, the number has to be unique.

В-общем тут обстоит все так, же как и в России. Буквы-цифры на выбор какие хочешь, но только чтоб все было в формате номера, то есть 1-2 буквы обозначающие место регистрации, а потом все что хочешь, но не больше шести символов, и сначала буквы, потом цифры. Ну, и чтоб такого номера уже больше не было.

Autobahn/Автобан

Nothing special. Just a highway. Normal speed limit is 130 km/h (81 mph). The sign below (crossed 130) designates the start of a no-speed limit zone. Better follow the rules and stay on the right lane unless passing a car.

Ничего особенного, просто ровное шоссе. Ограничение скорости 130 км/ч, иногда вообще без ограничения скорости. На всякий случай лучше принять вправо если никого не обгоняем.

But sometimes there are road works (that may last years), that's where all the driving skills are tested. The right lane is usually wider to accommodate the trucks. The left lane is more narrow, but it is faster since all the trucks keep right. When passing cars on the left, it's scary to look right, just try to keep as left as possible.

А иногда попадаются ремонтные работы (в некоторых местах это затягивается на долгие годы), и в таких местах проверяются все водительские навыки. Правая полоса обычно шире чем левая, но по ней ездят грузовики. Левая полоса уже, но по ней можно проехать быстрее, но если справа едет грузовик, то иногда лучше не смотреть вправо и держаться как можно левее.

Switzerland is beautiful. There are many similarities to Alaska: high mountains, high prices, scenery, not that many people, lots of tunnels. There are differences too: one can get across the entire Switzerland by car in several hours, especially in the north-to-south direction.

This is still all Switzerland.

Chewing gum wall, Seattle/Стена налепленной жвачки, Сиэттл

There is a chewing gum wall by the Pike Place market in Seattle, WA. Although the concept may be disgusting, it looks like a form of art. Not so long ago there was news about the massive wall cleanup, but any cleanup probably re-invigorated the interest and new visitors.

В Сиэттле есть стена недалеко от набережной где все лепят жвачку. Вот так выглядит. Вроде бы и фу, но как-то эстетично. Недавно вроде ее отчистили, но наверняка уже там опять поналепили нового.

European fast trains/Поезда-экспрессы в Европе

European trains are just as fast as Japanese bullet-trains. Japanese trains, however, are better because all seats rotate so that passengers always have a choice to face the direction of the train. No such option in Europe (at least in TGV or ICE trains). Despite the fast speed (300 km/h, or about 190 mph), there is no inconvenience even if facing the point of origin.

Европейские поезда-экспрессы не уступают японским синкансенам по скорости. Уступают комфортом -- в европейском поезде (TGV или ICE) нельзя развернуть сиденье чтоб сидеть лицом по ходу движения. Вот и покупаешь билет с 50%-ной вероятностью что сидеть будешь спиной. Но поезд идет плавно и разницы не чувствуется. А поезд несется хорошо, за 300 км/ч.

Cobblestone/Брусчатка

Cobblestone walkways and roads are in many places in Europe. Not only it is beautiful and reminds us of the old times, it is also very functional. Say, for example, there is a tear in the village's fiber Internet connection. No need to dig up all the roads, just undo a couple of stones.

Брусчаткой выложены многие улицы и площади в Европе. Это не только красиво и напоминает о былых временах, но и очень удобно. К примеру, порвался оптоволоконный кабел в деревне, так не надо перекапывать дороги, достаточно просто разобрать участок прорыва.

Bundesliga soccer game/Футбольная игра Бундеслиги

Soccer is sport number 1 in Germany. People of all ages play, villages have their teams and  championships, there are soccer fields in the middle of nowhere so that people can come out and play. These are the pictures of the top German soccer league -- Bundesliga. There is a stadium in the middle of nowhere, plenty of parking, access to highway. The stadium can fit about 30 thousand people. Traffic around the place starts piling up a couple of hours before the game, but a couple of hours after the game traffic is back to normal.

The game affects different people differently. Some are cold and complain about the prices of drinks, while some are so focused on the game that they forget everything.

Даже не буду описывать что такое футбол в Германии. Играют все и везде, в каждом селе есть сельская команда и каждая такая команда мечтает взять кубок водокачки. Раз идти, так уже идти на матч высшего дивизиона Бундеслиги. Стадион (в Зинсхайме) стоит посреди поля. Вокруг -- парковки. Стадион вмещает тыщ 30 народу и всем хватает парковки. Безусловно автобан до игры и после игры встает, но в принципе не так уж и плохо. Часа через полтора после окончания игры можно проехать спокойно.

Сама игра на разных людей производит разное впечатление. Кому-то холодно и 3 Евро за стакан чего нибудь попить или выпить -- это много, а кому-то азарт игры и накал страстей помогают забыть все на свете.

After the game, the team (Bayern Munich) comes to their fans to thank them for their support. Fans were very organized and chanted the same song throughout the entire game (90 minutes). Non-stop.

После игры команда (Мюнхенская Бавария) подбежала поблагодарить своих болельшиков. Они (болельщики) на протяжении всего матча слаженно горланили песню команды.

Sunday pre-New Year's shopping/Поход по магазинам в последнее воскресенье года

Everything is usually closed on Sundays in Germany (and most of Europe). This shopping mall decided to open its doors on a the last Sunday before the New Year's celebration. This is southwest of Germany, so people from Luxembourg and France came shopping as well. Some doors had to limit entry due to fire regulations.

В Германии все магазины обычно закрыты по воскресеньям. Этот торговый центр открылся на несколько часов в последнее воскресенье года. Он находится на юго-западе Германии, недалеко от границы, поэтому люди съехались еще и из Франции и Люксебмурга.
