London: dealing with traffic/Как Лондон справляется с наплывом автомобилей

Beginning in 2003, London started charging motorists for driving into the downtown area. The idea is the same as with the ZTL in Rome, except that the payment is not so steep, only 11.5 pounds. However, that adds up pretty quickly. These signs warn about the beginning of the congestion charge zone.

Начиная с 2003-го года, заезжая в самый центр Лондона, большинству владельцев автомобилей придется заплатить. Идея такая же как и с ZTL в Риме. Вроде бы и немного, всего 11,5 фунтов стерлингов, но если ездить каждый день, то накапливается немаленькая сумма. Вот такие знаки предупреждают о начале платной зоны.

And such cameras, as on the poll, take pictures of cars' license plates.

А вот такие камеры, как на столбе, фотографируют номера машин на выезде из платной зоны.

And here is one of the famous guards. The guards themselves are not famous, but their uniforms, mostly tall hats, are the source of attention.

А вот те самые знаменитые охранники замка. Сами охранники ничем не знамениты, но их форма, а в особенности высокая шапка, притягивает внимание.

And this is what the palace looks like from the garden side. The palace is open for visits two months out of the year and anyone can come inside and feel like any other person who came to see the Royals. It's very pretty on the inside, lots of pictures and beautiful interiors, but no photographs are allowed.

А вот так дворец выглядит с внутренней стороны, со стороны сада. Дворец открыт для посещения два месяца в году, так что любой может зайти и побыть на месте любых других людей кто приходит посетить членов королевской семьи. Внутри очень красиво, интерьер, картины, но нельзя фотографировать.

Going further through the garden, here is a peek at the palace.

And here are some more guards. They don't exactly look as the palace guards, and these are on horses, and they are not exactly going to the palace. Nevertheless, they are horse-back riding in the middle of the busy city, holding the traffic. There must be a reason...

А вот еще какие-то охранники. Немножко другие, но на лошадях, и едут не совсем в замок. Но вот так, на лошадях посреди города, задерживая движение. Чопорно и по-английски, в-общем.

London, Sherlock Holmes' museum/Лондон, музей Шерлока Холмса

There is the Sherlock Holmes museum in London. Baker street, 221B. The interior of the house is decorated with exhibits from the stories about the famous detective.

В Лондоне есть музей Шерлока Холмса. По адресу Бейкер стрит, 221Б. Интерьер дома украшен экспонатами из разных романов.

This toilet is on the very top floor. Look interesting.

There is also a hidden room, in the basement floor. It does not have all the museum fluff. Antique furniture, but it is still being actively used.

Еще в музее есть скрытая комната, она находится в подвале. В принципе это как часть музея, но без музейности. Старая мебель, но ей все еще пользуются.

London: the other parts/Лондон, просто город

London has many cozy beautiful places besides the ones that tourists like to visit.

В Лондоне много уютных интересных мест помимо тех, куда ходят туристы.

In order to get there, it's just enough to get off the beaten path and walk along side streets.

Достаточно просто уйти с широких основных улиц.

The brown building up ahead -- famous store named "Harrod's."

Коричневое здание впереди слева -- знаменитый универмаг Хэрродс.

Majority of the crosswalks state which side you need to look at to avoid cars if you want to cross the street. It's useful since the cars are driving on the left side of the road.

На дорогах написано в какую сторону смотреть чтоб не попасть под машину. Хорошая идея, к левостороннему движению привыкнуть быстро не получается.

To the left of the red phone booth is the original Hard Rock cafe. Some people complained that they could not find a decent burger in London, so they started the burger joint. One day a year, on the anniversary of its existence, this restaurant changes its prices to the original. Half-a-pound for a burger is a pretty hefty discount.

Слева от красной телефонной будки находится первый ресторан Хард Рок Кафе. Кое-кто когда-то пожаловался что нельзя найти приличного бургера в Лондоне, вот так и основали сеть ресторанов. Раз в год, на годовщину основания, в Лондоне в меню меняют цены на те, которые были в ходу на момент основания. Полфунта за бургер это очень хорошая скидка.

Despite the very high prices on land, the city has lots of parks.

Несмотря на высокие цены на недвижимость, в городе очень много зелени.
